Credit Repair Do it yourself or Not?

Credit Repair Do it yourself or Not?

Considering Credit Repair

Credit repair is on many people’s minds these days. Lender’s everywhere have clamped down on their lending guidelines. A significant number of people who had no problem getting financing even one year ago are discovering there are no options available to them today. More and more people are turning to credit repair to optimize their credit scores. If you are considering starting a credit repair effort you may be wondering if you should attempt it on your own, or hire a credit repair service to manage the process. It’s worth considering.

Measure the Complexity

There can be great satisfaction from undertaking a task and completing it successfully. Many people would rather repair their own automobile than hire a mechanic. Do it yourself opportunities are everywhere and range from simple tasks like preparing your own dinner to more complex jobs like building your own home. How much do you want to undertake? How much time do you have? Are you up to the job? Whatever the project, you should consider the complexity before deciding.

It Can be Done

Do it yourself credit repair is manageable, but it may be more complicated than you think. Given the enormous importance of your credit you owe it to yourself to examine the road ahead before embarking on your journey. You do not want to find yourself half way to the goal and unable to continue. Let’s take a few minutes and examine the credit repair road map.

Be Prepared

The first objective of credit repair is to make your credit reports as error-free as possible. Cleaning up your credit report is a unique task and involves understanding the language of the credit bureaus and the body of law that governs them. Without proper knowledge your efforts will fail. This is not an obstacle to your credit repair success, but like so many other do-it-yourself jobs you must make some effort before beginning.

More Than Meets the Eye

Many people make the mistake of thinking that credit repair is as simple as looking for unfamiliar information and asking the offending credit bureau to correct it. In fact, the vast majority of credit reporting errors will look completely familiar but still should not be present on your credit report as a matter of law. For example, let’s look at the chain of events that occur when a consumer defaults on a credit card.

A Credit Repair Case Study

If you were to cease payments on a credit card you would legally be in default on the day you missed your first scheduled payment. Typically, the creditor will turn the account over to a collector as soon as you are 180 days behind, and for accounting purposes, write off the bad debt. The collector, after meeting the legal notice obligations will report the debt to the credit bureaus, creating a new derogatory account on your report. If the collector fails to collect they are likely to resell the account to another collector who will repeat the process yet again, and so on. All of these events are based on your original legitimate failure to pay, yet is it now likely that a series of serious reporting errors have occurred. All of which can be cleaned up with a bit of knowledgeable credit repair. Let’s look.

The Issues Add Up

If you were to examine your credit report after the above events took place you would probably see three derogatory items on your report. The first would be the original creditor reporting your default along with a past due balance, the second would be the original collector, still reporting your collection, and the third would be the new collector reporting the same account again. Two of these derogatory items are erroneous.

Hidden Credit Repair Opportunities

It’s time for credit repair. Once a creditor sells a defaulted account to a collector they are no longer supposed to report a past due balance. This can be removed with a little credit repair effort. And a collector who no longer owns a debt is supposed to withdraw the reporting from your credit report altogether. Ditto on the removal. Eliminating these two errors alone can have a dramatic impact on your credit score.

Make Your Choice

The point being that these types of errors are clearly generated from genuine events and hence will be familiar, yet have no proper business on your credit report. Credit repair is very detail oriented and must be done in a patient and informed manner. If you are going to attempt the process on your own, please take the time to educate yourself. Otherwise, you may consider hiring a credit repair professional to manage the job on your behalf. Think carefully and decide wisely. You can succeed. Good luck!

The Gift of Credit Repair

The Gift of Credit Repair

Credit Repair Just For You

The holidays are a time of giving, and a time for reflection. If you have credit issues credit repair might be the perfect gift to give yourself. But how should you get started? You can manage your own credit repair project, or you can hire a reputable credit repair service to do the work for you. Both options are reasonable, but which is right for you?

Starting Credit Repair on Your Own

Managing your own credit repair project can be very rewarding, but it will take some time and effort. Every single do-it-yourself advocate in the credit repair field will tell you the same thing; don’t do anything until you have done your homework. You may do more damage than good. So pick up a good credit repair book and settle in for a nice mid-winter’s read. Proper preparation will avert problems and insure credit repair success.

Get a New Frame of Mind

If you are going to manage your own credit repair project, it is essential that you embrace a whole new frame of mind about your credit report. In a nutshell, don’t believe your eyes. That’s right; it’s time for you to give yourself the benefit of the doubt. One of the worst mistakes you can make is to ignore derogatory items on your credit report simply because they look familiar. The vast majority of errors on credit reports are generated by real events and will look familiar, but should not be reported as a matter of law. As you take the time to educate yourself about credit repair you will understand how common these terrible errors are, and what you need to do to correct them.

Get Organized

Another great tip for anyone about to start the credit repair process is to get organized. You will need to dispute your issues with all three credit bureaus individually, so it is essential to treat each bureau as a separate project. Set up three files, one for each bureau and plan on keeping meticulous records of all correspondence. Examine each report individually and you will notice some surprising differences that you must incorporate into your credit repair efforts. You may be surprised to see that the bureaus often report different account numbers for the same accounts, and even different variations of creditor names. For the best results customize each bureau dispute to match the info they report.

Don’t Give Up

A final word of wisdom for your do-it-yourself credit repair project, don’t give up. If the item you disputed is verified you should re-dispute it. You have the legal right to demand that the credit bureau request proper research by the creditor. If you re-dispute an item raise your voice! As your studies continue you will learn all about your legal rights under the Fair Credit Reporting Act. Most good books on credit repair will point out that the credit bureaus won’t do much for you voluntarily. You must become your own advocate. Prepare to stand your ground.

Brush up On Collection Laws

Another tip of value is to familiarize yourself with your rights under the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act. Most decent credit repair books will include a section on dealing with collectors. If you ever had an account charged-off, or currently have any active collections make sure to read carefully. If you know your rights you can deal with collectors from a position of power, and that can make a world of difference in your credit repair project.

Or Hire a Credit Repair Service

If all of this is too much, if you have enough on your mind already, just hire a credit repair service. Just take the time to check them out, look at their Better Business Bureau rating, consider their years in business, and most important give them a call. I suggest you make a list of questions and have a chat. Hire someone you feel comfortable with and let them guide you through the maze to credit repair success. You can do it! Good luck!

Top Ten Credit Repair Tips

Top Ten Credit Repair Tips

Starting Your Credit Repair Project

Credit Repair is not hard. Take the time to plan your effort and the results will be fantastic. Here is a list of our favorite credit repair tips. Try them together, or pick the ones that look good to you. Good luck, you are on your way!

Reduce Your Balances

The balances on your credit cards can cause a swing of 150 points. If you are utilizing over 60 percent of the limit on a card you are losing points; if you approach the limit your credit scores will plummet. If you really want to boost your scores reduce your balances to below 20 percent of the limit; i.e. if you have a ,000 limit get the balance under 0 and watch your scores take off.

Increase Your Card Limits

There are two sides to the balance-to-limit ratio. If you don’t have the wherewithal to get your balances under 20 percent of the limit, try to have the limit increased; the result will be the same. The credit markets are pretty tight these days, but it’s worth a phone call to the credit card company. Nothing ventured, nothing gained.

Open Secured Cards to Rebuild Credit

Secured credit cards are one of the best credit repair tools available. If your credit is poor and you cannot get approved for a regular credit card, apply for a secured card. Keep the balance-to-limit ratio in mind and maintain your balances under 20 percent of the limit for the best credit repair results. This is especially important with new cards which are weighed extra heavily by the credit scoring model.

Get a Couple of Authorized User Accounts

For a quick credit repair boost call a family member and have them add you to one of their credit cards as an authorized user. Fair Isaac Corp recently modified their software to block the benefit of brokered authorized user accounts, so don’t bother trying to purchase these accounts online, but legitimate family member authorized user accounts will continue to provide a major credit repair benefit.

Rehabilitate Student Loans

If you are in default of a student loan now is the time to make it right. There is no cause for fear, student loan lenders are required to provide affordable payment options to accommodate your needs. Before you call your lender call the Student Loan Ombudsman Office at (877) 557-2575, they are on your side and will explain your rights. Rehabilitation can even purge the old default status from your account; a nice credit repair bonus.

Validate Collection Letters

If you get a collection letter in the mail don’t throw it away; you will be wasting a great credit repair opportunity. Under the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act you have only 30 days to force the collector to validate the debt. If they cannot provide proof they have the legal right to collect along with an objective accounting from the original creditor they must cease all collection efforts and not report to the credit bureaus.

Give Yourself the Benefit of the Doubt

When it comes to credit repair give yourself the benefit of the doubt. Examine your credit reports carefully, but don’t assume the derogatory information is accurate just because it is being reported. If there is a shadow of a doubt dispute it. Many independent studies have verified that credit reports are likely to contain multiple errors. Put your credit repair rights to work and clean up your reports.

Challenge Collections

Among the worst credit report offenders are collectors. Collectors regularly buy and sell collection accounts. Collectors who no longer own a debt are supposed to withdraw the account from your credit report entirely. Unfortunately, there is no incentive for them to comply with the law, so they almost always let the expired accounts linger. Dispute expired collections and they will be removed from your report.

Underreported Limits

Examine your reports for underreported credit card limits. Recall that your credit score is affected by your balance-to-limit ratios. It is not uncommon for credit cards companies to report your limit as less than it is, or even as equal to your current balance. Just make a copy of a recent credit card statement and attach it to your dispute letter for quick credit repair results.

Call a Credit Repair Professional

If you are too busy to manage the credit repair task yourself, call a professional. A credit repair professional will examine your credit reports and insure that every possible strategy is utilized to correct errors and improve your scores. Either way, it’s your credit; make sure it is as good as it can be.

How to Get Great Credit Repair Results

How to Get Great Credit Repair Results

The Foundation of Credit Repair Success

It’s time to take stock. Where are you today? Are your finances stable enough to make timely payments on your obligations from this point forward? Credit repair can completely transform your credit and even put you on the path to long term wealth. But to be a good candidate for credit repair you must be able to keep up with your existing commitments. There is no point in making the effort if you are still slipping backward each month. If you can commit to timely payments from this point forward you are a candidate for genuine credit repair success!

Understanding the Nature of Credit

Credit repair success can be measured by the changes in your credit scores. Cleaning up all of the erroneous reporting issues from your credit report is essential, but in the final analysis it is your credit scores that will tell the tale. Credit scores are the result of everything on your report. As important as eliminating negative items may be, the presence of positive credit is even more important. In short, good credit scores require the presence of open and properly managed accounts. Managing your accounts for credit repair success is easy if you know how.

Your Accounts and Credit Score Optimization

As odd as it seems, you may make all of your payments right on time, for years on end, and still have awful credit scores. The good news is that a bit of knowledge can turn things around on a dime and lift your scores dramatically. There are two parts to this credit repair secret; type of credit, and account balances. When it comes to your credit scores not all credit is created equal. It is simple; mainstream credit cards, such as MasterCard, Visa, American Express, and Discover are good. Store cards and consumer credit, such as furniture store loans, are bad. If you have store cards or consumer debt you should work on paying it off. Now, let’s chat about managing those good mainstream credit cards for credit repair success.

Revolving Account Management

If you don’t have any good open credit cards, open them now. If you can’t get approved for unsecured credit, just get a couple of secured cards. They are easy to get and you won’t be denied. Once you have your credit cards you are in a position to really get your credit scores moving in the right direction. All you need to do is get the balances under twenty percent of the cards capacity. If you have a five hundred dollar card get the balance under one hundred dollars and watch your scores take off. Conversely, you need to know that a balance near the card’s limit can knock as much as one hundred and fifty points off your score. If you have high balances, don’t worry. As soon as you pay the balances down your scores will pop right back up (just allow time for the creditor to report the new balance to the credit bureau).

Whipping Your Credit Report into Shape

Credit repair rule number one: Give yourself the benefit of the doubt! Don’t believe everything on your credit report just because it is in writing. If there is any chance a derogatory item is erroneous, dispute it! For goodness sake, it’s your credit and it’s important, so get pro-active, or hire a professional credit repair service to manage the process for you. There is plenty of evidence to support an aggressive approach to credit repair. Over seventy five percent of all credit reports contain errors. The majority of these errors cause consumers to pay premium interest rates on the money they borrow. Don’t be victimized.

Two Handy Credit Repair Tips

Once you get into the task of cleaning up your credit report here are two handy credit repair pointers that can help you out. First, legally, collectors are supposed to withdraw their reporting of an account as soon as they sell the account or return it to the original creditor, but they rarely do. Challenge all questionable collections. And, second, credit card issuers have been known to underreport credit card limits. This underreporting has the same impact on your scores as if you had run up your balance. Proofread your reports carefully for accurate credit limits.

Don’t be Afraid to Ask for Credit Repair Help

Reach out! If you don’t have the time to manage the job of credit repair on your own call a pro. A credit repair professional will review every single detail on your report. They will be able to identify your credit score optimization options, find deficiencies in your credit, and dispute all of the questionable derogatory issues in an experienced and efficient manner. Good luck with your credit repair project!

Bad Credit Repair-Ways To Repair Your Credit Legally

Bad Credit Repair-Ways To Repair Your Credit Legally

In today’s world of credit score based lending, credit repair can make a world of difference. Credit repair is simply a legal way to clean up and improve your credit file also known as your credit report. A successful credit repair process has an end result of bringing an individual’s financial history back to life. As much as it helps, it takes time, and should never be viewed as a quick fix.

Although credit repair may seem like a very tedious process it is actually a small price to pay for the benefits gained. This process has become a necessary part of today’s life as more and more people fall victim to bad credit. This “repair” re-establishes the individual’s creditworthiness in the eyes of potential lenders and/or existing creditors. Credit repair is not an easy process and is not something that happens over night.

Taking the time and effort to repair your credit requires patience and, many times, the help of an outside organization. Many have been through similar situations as you and the good news is that it is possible clean up your credit file and remove all the inaccurate information. However, truly fixing your previous financial issues can only be achieved through financial discipline and hard work.

Repairing your credit profile is one of the most important financial decisions you can make. It isn’t just a series of techniques and steps to take, it is your legal right to have questionable negative items removed from our credit files that all of us have as consumers. Regardless of how bad your credit is credit repair is a possibility but it requires changes in spending, saving and bill payment habits. Repairing a bad credit score will require you to have patience, focus and also a little luck.

So how does it all work? A detailed review of your credit file is one big piece of the credit repair puzzle. After careful review, any inaccuracies or incomplete information on a credit report should be reported to the consumer reporting agency (CRA) and the bank, credit card company, or other entity that provided the information to the agency. There may be a substantial amount of inaccuracies currently in your own credit file. Reporting agencies rarely verify or cross check information unless they have a specific reason, like a request from you, to do so.

Although sometimes it seems to be a difficult, time consuming endeavor it needs to be a priority in your personal finance life. Bad credit should not be a source of shame or embarrassment. In addition, it can have more affect on your life then you may realize. Besides the psychological effects it can have on some, bad credit becomes an issue, when you need to make any major purchase such as a home, car, furniture or major appliances. Repairing your credit helps consumers who are being denied or do not qualify for the best interest rates, because of negative information on their reports.

Although not known as a priority for some, credit repair is not just helpful for those who have bad financial history. Credit repair can even be performed on individuals that have moderate to good credit scores, simply to improve their score even more. Whether to help those recover from a negative financial past or to make additional improvements for those with good credit, it is a worthwhile investment.

Credit repair is a booming business now and, unfortunately, a lot of unscrupulous elements are thriving in the market. Scams and shady companies are catching millions of people around the world, and are bleeding those people for millions of dollars a year. Some credit repair clinics do this by challenging every item in a credit file be it negative, positive, or neutral with the hope of overwhelming the credit bureau into removing information without verifying it. Other companies often claim they guarantee to get you a credit card, regardless of your financial history.

If you decide to work on improving your scores, it is absolutely in your best interest to enlist the help of a legal professional. Bad credit repair is possible and can all be done legally, by legal professionals. Due diligence on your part is required as many law firms can charge as high as 00 for a consultation and some debt counseling offices can charge as much as 0 just to start the process to erase poor credit. Other law firms that specialize in credit score repair have similar techniques at their disposal, which are also completely legal, but offer legal credit repair at substantially lower fees.

Credit Repair Tips

Credit Repair Tips

A list of ten credit repair tips follows. This is by no means a complete list, maybe just enough to get you started.

Credit Repair Tip #1 Look for free information before you buy anything. Did you know that the three major credit bureaus, Experian, Equifax and TransUnion, are required to provide consumers with one free copy of their credit report every year? If not, you are not alone. Companies which sell credit reports and other credit repair tips are betting that most people do not.

Credit Repair Tip #2 Visit www.annualcreditreport.com. At this site consumers can view and print the information accumulated by the credit report agencies or credit bureaus. There is no charge for these reports, but the credit bureaus are allowed to promote the products that they sell, such as credit repair tips, on this site. Credit Repair Tip #3 There may be a lot of information on your credit report or just a little, depending on the types of credit that you have and the length of time that you have been using credit. Print the reports out and begin the process of reviewing the information that the credit bureaus have been accumulating about you. Use a yellow highlighter to highlight information that you believe may be inaccurate, misleading or unverifiable. This is information that you will dispute.

Credit Repair Tip #4 One of the credit bureaus has an on-line dispute system, but it is not very user friendly. The window is tiny and in order to read a sentence, you have to scroll from left to right. The best way to notify the credit bureaus of your disputes is to send them a letter. Letter writing suggestions are included in many books with credit repair tips, but you can view a perfectly usable example of a dispute letter at the Federal Trade Commission’s credit website.

Credit Repair Tip #5 Wait.

Credit Repair Tip #6 If you have not received a response from the credit bureau or bureaus within thirty days, send a follow-up letter: “Please remove these items from my credit report immediately. I have waited a reasonable amount of time.”

Credit Repair Tip #7 Wait.

Credit Repair Tip #8 If you receive no response from the follow-up letter, you will need to contact a lawyer, preferably one that specializes in credit repair issues. The credit bureaus are allowed to disregard disputes that they consider frivolous. There are no guidelines for disputes which might be considered frivolous. Credit Repair Tip #9 Sometimes options are recommended which are illegal, such as file segregation. Do not create more problems for yourself.

Credit Repair Tip #10 Visit creditrepairsoft.com for more credit repair tips. This site also shows how different actions affect your credit score.

There are several sources on the internet for credit repair tips. As with most information, there are hundreds of books full of credit repair tips, software programs with credit repair tips and credit repair specialists that charge for their credit repair tips, but there is a lot of free information as well. For more credit repair tips, vistit the Credit Repair Blog at

Mark Henry is the author related to Credit Repair Software, Bad Credit Repair Credit Repair Software Kit only at creditrepairsoft.com. Buy Credit Repair Software to repair your credit rating, to raise your credit score and to maintain an excellent credit score.
